I’m running a cold-call agent to book demo meetings. It works, but it still sounds stiff and a bit scripted. Any tips to help it feel more like a real person without messing up the sales flow?

Hi James,

I had the same challenge when building my outbound agent, it technically worked, but the conversation felt flat and overly scripted. But these changes helped a lot, and they’ve worked just as well for my inbound support agent too, you could

  • Include light filler words like “uhm”, “you know”, or “well” in the prompt. These add small pauses that make the agent sound more human and less robotic, especially when asking questions or reacting to feedback.
  • Use indirect prompting when you want the AI to sound flexible. Instead of rigid lines, try instructions like Ask if the person would be open to a quick call to explore the product. This gives the agent room to adjust its tone based on the user.
  • Avoid overused reactions like “Perfect” or “I’m sorry”. Instead, guide the agent to use more natural follow-ups like “Got it, thanks for sharing that” or “Okay, that makes sense.”
  • Remove bullet lists from the prompt. If your agent needs to mention features or benefits, combine them into one flowing sentence. For example: “You’ll get fast setup, flexible pricing, and 24/7 support”—it sounds way smoother.
  • Always include pause instructions [] after every question. Without this, the agent might rush through the conversation and interrupt the user.

Hope things are working nicely so far!
